Living by Faith: Trusting the Unseen Hand of God

Betrayed, Sold, and Forgotten – Yet Not Forsaken

Joseph’s life is a testimony to what it means to trust the unseen hand of God, even when circumstances appear bleak. As a young boy, he had dreams of greatness, but instead of immediate fulfilment, he faced a series of betrayals. His brothers, fuelled by jealousy, sold him into slavery. Imagine the agony—separated from his father, stripped of his dignity, and cast into a foreign land.

Yet, despite this betrayal, Joseph did not abandon his faith. In Potiphar’s house, he worked diligently, and God's favour was upon him. But just when things seemed to be improving, another trial struck. Falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife, Joseph was thrown into prison—forgotten by men, but never by God.

Faith in the Dungeon

It would have been easy for Joseph to give in to despair. How often do we question God when life takes an unexpected turn? How often do we ask, “Why me?” when faced with trials? Joseph had every reason to feel abandoned, yet he held onto his faith. Even in the darkness of the prison, he remained faithful, interpreting dreams for fellow prisoners and waiting for God's time.

Two full years passed after he helped Pharaoh’s cupbearer, who forgot about him. Waiting is often the hardest test of faith, but Joseph did not lose hope. He believed that God was working behind the scenes.

From the Pit to the Palace

Then, in a moment, everything changed. Pharaoh had a troubling dream, and suddenly, Joseph was remembered. He was called from prison, and by God's wisdom, he interpreted the dream, foreseeing years of abundance followed by famine. Pharaoh, recognizing God’s hand in Joseph’s life, elevated him to the second-highest position in Egypt.

Joseph's years of suffering had not been in vain. His trials were preparing him for a greater purpose—saving an entire nation and, ultimately, his own family from famine.

Faith That Sees Beyond Pain

When Joseph finally revealed himself to his brothers, instead of seeking revenge, he comforted them, saying: 'Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good.' - Genesis 50:20, New African Bible.

Joseph understood that every painful moment, every betrayal, and every hardship was part of a divine plan. He saw that God had used his trials to position him for a greater purpose.

Lessons from Joseph’s Faith

· Faith Requires Endurance – Sometimes, God allows trials to refine us. Like Joseph, we may endure suffering before stepping into our purpose.

· Faith Trusts God's Timing – Joseph spent years in waiting, but God’s plan was never delayed. What seems like a delay is often divine preparation.

· Faith Sees the Bigger Picture – What others mean for harm, God can turn for good. Even in suffering, God is working behind the scenes.

Living by Faith Today

Like Joseph, we all face seasons of trials—betrayal by those we trust, false accusations, disappointments, and long periods of waiting. But Joseph’s story reminds us that faith is not about understanding every detail of our journey; it is about trusting that God’s unseen hand is guiding us to a greater purpose.

Even in the darkest moments, hold onto faith. Your story is not over yet. Just as Joseph rose from the pit to the palace, God is preparing you for something greater.

A Prayer for Trusting God in Trials

Heavenly Father, in hardship, betrayal, and waiting, help me trust Your unseen hand. Like Joseph, teach me to stay faithful when circumstances seem unfair. When trials come, remind me You are working behind the scenes, turning harm into good. Fill me with patience, endurance, and strength to forgive those who wrong me. Keep my faith unshaken, knowing Your plans are greater than I can imagine. In Jesus’ name, today, Amen.
