The Journey Begins

40 minutes read

Maximilian tightened the straps of his worn sandals and took a deep breath. The sun had barely risen, casting a golden glow over the dusty road ahead. His mission was clear—to carry the Gospel into a land where it was unwelcome, where speaking the truth could cost him his life. Yet, as he stepped forward, doubt clawed at the edges of his faith. He had prepared for the spiritual battle, but was he ready for the physical dangers that lay ahead? Bandits roamed the roads, soldiers patrolled the cities, and informants lurked in the shadows. Still, he pressed on, fuelled by the fire of faith in his soul.

The journey ahead was long and treacherous, stretching across mountains and valleys, through forests where wild beasts prowled and rivers where strong currents threatened to pull even the mightiest under. Maximilian had little more than the clothes on his back, a small satchel of provisions, and the Scriptures he held close to his heart. His faith was his shield, his guide, his constant companion. Yet, as the horizon stretched endlessly before him, doubt whispered insidious questions. Could he truly make a difference? Was he strong enough, wise enough, faithful enough?

He passed through small villages where curious eyes followed him. Some greeted him with cautious smiles, while others turned away, unwilling to welcome a stranger. He offered blessings where he could, prayed with those who allowed him, and accepted hospitality when it was given. Yet, in every town and settlement, there were murmurs—rumours of unrest, of spies watching for those who spread forbidden words, of men who disappeared in the night, never to be seen again.

One evening, as he sat by a fire outside a quiet village, an old man approached him. He moved with a slow, deliberate grace, his face lined with years of hardship. "You are not from here," the man said, settling beside him. "No," Maximilian admitted, offering a piece of bread. "I travel to share the Word of God." The old man took the bread but remained silent for a long moment. Then, he spoke softly, "Be careful, young one. Faith is a light, but in dark places, it can attract danger." Maximilian nodded, understanding the warning. The road ahead would not be easy, but he had already chosen his path. He could not turn back now.

In Milan, Monica sat at her husband’s grave, tracing the etched letters of his name with trembling fingers. The pain of loss was still fresh, an ache that even faith could not seem to ease. Once, she had been steadfast, a pillar of strength in her community. Now, she questioned everything. Why had God taken him? Why had her prayers gone unanswered?

As the morning breeze rustled the olive trees, she whispered a prayer—not for answers, but for peace. If she was to move forward, she had to rebuild her faith, one step at a time. The city bustled around her—merchants calling out their wares, children laughing as they played in the narrow streets. Life moved on, indifferent to her sorrow. Monica knew she could not remain lost in grief forever. She had responsibilities—a home to tend, a son to guide, a community that looked to her for support. But how could she lead others when she herself was so uncertain?

That evening, as she sat in her modest home, a knock at the door startled her. It was Lucia, a dear friend and confidante. "Come," Lucia said, taking Monica’s hands in her own. "There is work to be done." Lucia led her to the church, where a group of women gathered, whispering fervent prayers. Some had lost husbands, others children. All carried burdens too heavy to bear alone. Monica hesitated at the threshold, but then she stepped forward. She joined their prayers, their quiet strength wrapping around her like a warm embrace. Perhaps she did not need all the answers. Perhaps faith was not about certainty but about choosing to believe, even in the face of doubt.

Francis stood at the threshold of his modest home, looking out at the narrow streets of Goa. His heart ached with longing—to serve, to preach, to live out the calling he felt so deeply. But what of his family? His ageing parents relied on him, and his younger siblings needed his guidance. Could he truly abandon them to pursue a mission that might lead him far from home?

A letter from a travelling minister sat in his hands, an invitation to join in service. The decision weighed heavily, but he knew one thing for certain—he could no longer ignore the call. The following morning, he sought his father’s counsel. The old man sat beneath the shade of a mango tree, his hands rough from years of labour, his gaze steady. "You have always had a restless spirit, my son," he said after reading the letter. "If this is your calling, you must go. But remember, service begins at home."

Francis wrestled with the words. He had spent years serving his family, his village, his community. Yet, something within him yearned for more—to bring the light of faith to those who had never known it, to stand on foreign soil and speak of hope, to test the strength of his beliefs in the face of adversity. After days of prayer and contemplation, he made his decision. With a heavy heart, he packed his belongings, said farewell to his family, and set out to meet the minister. As he walked away from the only home he had ever known, he felt a mix of sorrow and exhilaration. The journey ahead was uncertain, but his purpose was clear.

The paths of Maximilian, Monica, and Francis were vastly different, yet intertwined by the same thread—faith tested, challenged, and ultimately strengthened. Each faced trials, each carried burdens, and each stood on the precipice of change. Their journeys had begun not with grand proclamations or miraculous signs, but with simple, quiet steps forward.

For Maximilian, the road was fraught with danger, yet he pressed on, knowing that his mission was greater than his fears. For Monica, healing began not with answers, but with the courage to stand amidst her doubts and still choose faith. For Francis, the call to serve demanded sacrifice, but he embraced it, trusting that his path had been set before him for a reason.
