A Mustard Seed

95 minutes read

Matthew 17:20, New African Bible.

'If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.' - Matthew 17:20, New African Bible.

The Power of Small Beginnings

The mustard seed stands as a symbol of faith’s transformative power. Though tiny, it grows into a great tree, providing shelter and nourishment. Jesus uses this imagery to teach that even the smallest faith—when nurtured—has the power to produce abundant spiritual fruit. Faith begins as a spark within our hearts, growing when nourished through prayer, the sacraments, and acts of charity (CCC 153).

Faith That Moves Mountains

Jesus’ words challenge us to believe in the power of faith. He is not merely speaking of physical mountains, but of trials, doubts, and obstacles. Even small faith can move mountains of fear, despair, and impossibility. Saint Augustine reminds us: 'Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of faith is to see what you believe.'

Nurturing the Seed of Faith

Faith is a journey of continuous growth. The Church provides nourishment to cultivate faith: · Sacred Scripture – deepens trust in God’s promises (Romans 10:17). · The Eucharist – strengthens faith as Christ dwells within us (John 6:35). · Prayer and Devotion – Rosary, Adoration, Divine Mercy Chaplet. · Acts of Charity – faith without works is dead (James 2:26).

Saints: Living Witnesses of Mustard Seed Faith

· St. Thérèse of Lisieux – embraced the 'Little Way' of trust and surrender. · St. Josephine Bakhita – found hope in Christ and became a beacon of resilience. · Blessed Benedict Daswa – stood firm in faith despite persecution. · Blessed Antonia Maria Verna – dedicated her life to service, proving that small faith can blossom into lasting legacy.

The Call to Grow in Faith

Jesus’ parable reminds us that no act of faith is too small. Faith, when nurtured, can lead to great miracles. The Catechism teaches that faith is both personal and communal (CCC 166). As we strengthen our faith, we inspire others to believe.

A Faith That Transforms

Like the mustard seed, faith starts small but has infinite potential. Jesus invites us to trust in His power, believing that with faith, 'nothing will be impossible.' (Matthew 17:20).

Reflection Questions and Answers

a. What does it mean to trust in God as our Shepherd? Answer: It means believing He provides, guides, and protects us. We apply this trust daily through prayer, sacraments, gratitude, and surrender.

b. How do challenges fit into God’s plan? Answer: Trials are opportunities for deeper faith and growth. God’s providence guides creation toward perfection (CCC 302).

c. What practical steps can we take to live out Psalm 23? Answer: Daily surrender in prayer, frequent sacraments, living simply, reflecting on Scripture, and trusting in trials.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You have taught us that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. Grant us the grace to trust You completely, even when our faith feels weak. May the example of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Josephine Bakhita, Blessed Benedict Daswa, and Blessed Antonia Maria Verna inspire us to live with unwavering faith, hope, and love. Strengthen our hearts through Your Word, the Eucharist, and acts of charity, that we may grow into the disciples You call us to be. Amen.
